Upgrading a Merv (1/16 Revo)

This started off as a simple fix, to get this ready to sale and turned into a big project. After replacing the frame, rebuilding the front diff, replacing the rear, replacing front and read bulk heads, the tranny, front and rear arms, replacing wheels and tires I am now working on replacing motor and ESC.

Why you ask? My answer is simple, cause it's cool. The stock motor and esc tend to get hot running them on 3s and a 1/10 motor does not. So I am looking for less heat, more power, and tons more fun!!

I bought a Castle SideWinder V2 combo with a 5700kv motor from Eric, and I am now installing it. I will let you know how this turns out.

I'll post all the parts used and part numbers shortly so stayed tuned for launch times.

Here’s the specs:

Motor Castle Creations 5700kV
ESC Mamba Max
Battery 3S -11.1 Volts
Pinion 31T
Spur 50T
MPH Est 75

The Spektrum SR3100 and SR3520

Both of these are great receivers however there are a few differences and things you need to be aware of when using the SR3100

The sr3100 uses the coaxial antenna, when properly installed with no tight bends, kinks, pinches, etc it will provide greater signal distance. But in most cases you will never get out of signal reach.
The standard and shorter antenna on the sr3520 provides plenty of signal range, and the smaller compact size helps it fit better in most cars. Space is getting tighter and tighter in newer cars, so small components work best, also keeps weight down ever so slightly.

In most cars you have a radio compartment that allows you to run the antenna wire through the same area as the servos, then around an up through the antenna tube on most Traxxas and Losi cars this means you might end up making some tight bends with the antenna wire which could introduce glitches in your system.

So here’s a mod that you can apply to help keep you antenna as kink proof as possible.

1. Get a small grommet at your local electronics store that will hold the antenna tube you plan to use.

2. Drill a hole in the lid of the radio compartment just large enough to install the grommet.

3. Install grommet.

4. Cut two pieces of fuel tubing put one on the antenna tube.

5. Install antenna in grommet, then put the other fuel tubing on the inside of the radio compartment.

6. Run you antenna wire into the antenna tube and install the radio.

*Hint : You can us shoe goo to make it a little more water proof.

Enjoy your car and Happy Thanksgiving!!

Flying after work

Who says you can't go flying after work in the winter? Make sure you use your car lights, to light you runway up.

Keep your setup simple, I am using a profile air frame, electric motor, 4s batteries and some LEDS to light it all up.

What!?! 3D flying at night!! Of course, nothing like having people come over to check out the UFO or having red on top, blue on the bottom have the plane do a blender over your head and watch the colors turn purple as the blur together. Keep the shutter open and get some cool pics.

Geoffrey Peterson lives at RCHobbies

Geoffrey Peterson (click here for his blog) - Was created by a lot of help from a lot of people but the idea came from the "Late, Late show." the owner loves this plane as it can do many weird tricks in the sky that makes him smile. Geoffrey flew most of this season in IMAC and at some locations around Nampa Idaho.

He has recently been converted from a DA-60cc motor to electric running 12s. He has a Castle Creations 120AMP ESC with a Hacker A80-10 power house. Now that it's quiet you can see it flying around the skys of Boise and Nampa.

RCHobbies supports IMAC

Feel like your piloting is stuck in a rut? Looking to increase your piloting skills? RCHobbies has supported IMAC completions since the day it opened. Two of your staff compete in IMAC and would be more than happy to help you get involved. Talk to Ron and Bruce about it at RCHobbies.
